A Private Casino for an Intimate Event

Casino History

The Lime Rock Casino was built in 1892 by the workers of the Barnum-Richardson Company, a foundry & manufacturer of railroad wheels, sold worldwide. The fine quality of the raw materials in the area, made for exceptionally strong yet flexible steel.

This was a town of men, most sleeping in tents along the hills of the current Lime Rock Park. There were 5 barbers in town and Lime Rock even had its own post office.

It was these workers who built the Casino as their much needed entertainment center. “Casino” was a term commonly used in 19th century for entertainment halls, not necessarily for gambling. The upstairs Parisian stage hosted Brass bands, Actors, Opera singers and even gifted soothsayers! The downstairs main lever hosted the Trinity church suppers, and was said to have the best equipped kitchen in the area.

When the Barnum-Richardson Company disbanded in the 1920’s, the Casino became an independent movie theatre. Eventually it was purchased by the Wallach family who were manufacturers of block printed fabric, using the old world German style.

Then the property went into neglect in the 1970’s.

Today’s Lime Rock Casino

The current owners have undergone decades of extensive repairs and additions while carefully maintaining the historic significance of the property. With much of the restoration complete, the Casino can be available for unique private events on a limited basis in a setting listed on the National Historic Registry. The original theatre boasts 16 foot ceilings and original pounded tin walls. It provides a quintessential backdrop for a dinner or cocktail party with live entertainment or films displayed on the original theatre stage.
